A few days ago we wrote about Scilla sibiria and
its value as an early season "opener" for the deciduous shade
garden. This Corydalis is an excellent companion to fill the same
niche as the Scilla. Lacy glaucous blue/grey leaves emerge early in
spring, forming a tidy mound 6"-8" high. Atop the foliage are borne
delicate funnel-shaped mauve-purple flowers. Like Scilla, this plant
self-sows and will eventually create a spring carpet in the shade
garden. Again, like Scilla, it disappears underground into dormancy
in time to allow the next show to begin (Hosta, ferns, etc.).
