Aralia racemosa, commonly known as "Spikenard", is a native
American woodland wildflower of generous proportions. Growing
36"-48" in height, it can attain a spread of twice that. Upright
racemes of small starry greenish-white flowers are borne above
compound foliage in summer. However, the main attraction comes in
autumn when the flowers transform into dense hanging clusters of
small glossy fruit, maturing from bright green to rich
burgundy-black. Although the fruit is inedible the spicy root of
this plant was once used to flavor root beer. Aralia thrives in
shade and its showy fall fruit makes it a good fit for the large
scale woodland garden in need of autumn interest. |
