(last week of May): Clematis recta 'Purpurea' (Ground Clematis) |

When we think "Clematis", most of us think of climbing vines with
large vibrant flowers. Clematis recta is an exception with its
non-climbing habit and its small, delicate, frothy white flowers.
This is a Bush or Ground Clematis with a sprawling, rambling habit
that can weave through a garden or be
supported upright by
artificial means such as a Peony ring or decorative support
structure. The
new foliage is a purple-red color,
maturing to a glaucus grey-green. The
buds
are borne in clusters, opening to abundant masses of
fragrant star-shaped cream white flowers. Attractive wispy silver
seedheads follow the flowers and remain for several weeks. The
foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season. A fine
