Blooming This Week (3rd
week of September):
"Seven Son Flower" (aka
"Autumn Lilac")
(Heptacodium miconioides)
Although we are an
herbaceous plant nursery every once in awhile a woody plant comes
along that we just can't resist sharing. This multi-stemmed small
tree/large shrub is so rare and yet so garden-worthy that we felt we
needed to offer it. It is in glorious full bloom now with a
profusion of creamy-white flowers, which will be followed by equally
showy red calyxes. In winter the exfoliating bark adds subtle
seasonal interest. This is definitely a small tree that deserves
more attention as a landscape plant.
