Blooming This Week (3rd week of
August):
Hardy Hibiscus
It's hard to believe that anything that looks
like this can be hardy to our Wisconsin climate - but it is! Huge
dinner-plate size flowers bring a tropical feel to the Midwestern
autumn garden. Some cultivars, such as Hibiscus
'Kopper King',
also offer burgundy/bronze colored foliage in addition to
dramatic flowers. Other varieties include the lovely pinwheel
flowering
'Turn of the Century', the vivid
red 'Fireball'
and the mixed colors of
Disco Belle Mix. All are show
stoppers!
Note: Hibiscus are extremely late to break
dormancy in the spring, often not beginning to show new growth until
well into June. So, don't despair if you don't see green in the
spring. Give them time.
