Blooming Today (July 11, 2016) : Purple Prairie Clover (Petalostemon/Dalea purpurea)

Purple Prairie Clover is a surprisingly beautiful and relatively unknown native prairie plant. The dense cone shaped flowers are bright purple in summer atop erect 24"-30" stems with sender needle-like grey-green foliage. Being a prairie native this plant is well adapted to drought and puts down a deep taproot.
 USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8.
