Blooming Today (Sept. 8, 2015) : Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus cvs.)

Hardy Hibiscus

It's hard to believe that anything that looks like this can be hardy to our Wisconsin climate - but it is! Huge dinner-plate size flowers bring a tropical feel to the Midwestern autumn garden. Some cultivars also offer burgundy/bronze to rich red/purple colored foliage in addition to dramatic flowers. Hibiscus come in a tremendous range of colors including white, pink, bicolor and fire engine red. All are show stoppers!

Note: Hibiscus are extremely late to break dormancy in the spring, often not beginning to show new growth until well into June. So, don't despair if you don't see green in the spring. Give them time.
