Blooming This Week (July
6, 2014): Phlox 'Miss Lingard' |
|
Gardeners so often come to the Farm seeking the newest perennial introductions, under the impression that newer = better. Not so! Many of the finest perennial plants have been with us for generations, shared through the years by relatives and neighbors and carrying well loved memories with them in their travels. A perfect example of such a plant is Phlox 'Miss Lingard'. Although there are hundreds of newer cultivars available few perform as admirably as this old time beauty. Believed to have been introduced in the late 1800s this heirloom Phlox offers an abundance of lovely white flowers, sturdy upright habit, glossy mildew-resistant foliage and exceptional length of bloom (often blooming for upwards of six weeks). Its pure white flowers and the fact that it blooms during the "wedding season" of June & July gained it the affectionate historic nickname "Wedding Phlox". It is a plant with a history and - we hope - a future. Like so many heirloom varieties Phlox 'Miss Lingard' is disappearing from the nursery trade, replaced by the constant influx of "New & Better" varieties. We were down to just a few remaining plants of this favorite when we realized that it had essentially disappeared from the trade. Fortunately we were able to rebuild our stock and now have a good supply of 'Miss Lingard' to offer in 2014. We strongly believe that the test-of-time is the best way for perennials to prove themselves. These old time performers, shared with affection through generations, are the true "Proven Winners" of the plant world. |
