Blooming this week (2nd week of June):

Valeriana officinalis
"Garden Heliotrope"

An old-fashioned favorite grown for its sweetly fragrant flowers. The green ladder-like foliage is similar to Jacob's Ladder and is mostly basal. The flowers are white to pale lavender and have a lovely scent.  Flowers are held aloft on tall slender stems that can reach to 60" tall in ideal conditions. Valeriana prefers moist soil in full sun but is a hardy and adaptable plant that will grow in light shade or drier sites also. This is one of those "Grandmother's Garden" plants that brings with its fragrance sweet memories. Caution: Self sows prolifically on open soil.
